British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he said. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
