Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
- Another creative title was excluded that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
